Soft background music may help some dogs settle, but it is not a treatment for anxiety. Every dog responds differently; use it alongside a familiar safe space and veterinary advice when needed.
What the evidence says
A kennel study found that dogs spent more time lying down and less time standing while music played. A veterinary evidence review found only weak evidence that classical music reduces stress in hospitalized dogs. These settings are not the same as a home, and they do not prove that any soundtrack treats anxiety.
Try it gently
- Start with soft background sound while your dog is already comfortable. Keep the volume low and allow them to move away.
- Watch your dog's response. If they seem more unsettled, stop the music rather than increasing the volume.
- For storms or fireworks, background sound is only one comfort measure. Offer a familiar safe space, company and treats or play if your dog wants them.
When to ask a veterinarian
If fear is intense, persistent or worsening, talk with your veterinarian about a broader care plan. Do not rely on a playlist to manage severe distress.
